It's Time.

As I opened the Amazon box that arrived this morning, I whispered under my breath, "it's time".

As I removed the contents and Dolly (one of my cats) immediately went and sat in the empty box.

In amongst the Halloween decorations that adorned my kitchen, I knew it was time to start preparing for one of the highlights of the Trinder Christmas calendar...... the Christmas Eve painting!

Ready to get creative!

After our parents died, my sister and Lucy and I decided that at Christmas, we would keep some of the old family traditions, but we would introduce our own new ones.

Christmas was always a really big deal in our house, my dad would insist on putting the Christmas tree up on the first Sunday in December, we'd all have to be there to decorate it, whilst we drank mulled wine, ate mince pies and listened to Nat King Cole and Dean Martin. Lucy and I would argue about who got to put Red Whisker on the tree. Red Whisker featured in a story my dad made up and it was serious business as to who got to put him on the tree. A photograph would be taken, so that the next year, the other one of us got to do it!

We decided that one of the things we would introduce would be a Christmas Eve painting, we would each paint something for the other one.

Because we weren't dragged up, we put in place the following rules.

  1. The painting had to hang where visitors could see it, for the whole of the following year.

  2. The paintings would be exchanged on Christmas Eve.

  3. You can't paint a spunking penis.

Apart from that, you can paint what you like!

So far, we've managed to not paint the same things and as Lucy is a better artist than me, I always think that I get the better deal.

So today, it's time for me to start to create the picture that will hang on Lucy's wall for the whole of 2025. I just need to make sure that what's in my head I can put onto the canvas!

Below are the ones we've done in previous years, you can see what I mean about Lucy being the better artists, the ones I:ve done are the ones that are generally a bit crapper.

What Christmas family traditions do you have?
