The Swedish and Norweigan have a word "Hygge"it describes a cozy, contented mood evoked by comfort and conviviality. I love the image it conjures up of snuggling by the fire, big snoochy jumpers, autumnal walks and coffee dates with friends.
So, I thought I'd set myself a 31 Day October Hygge Challenge, I say challenge, it's really more of an excuse to do lots of things that I enjoy, so not a huge amount of challenging will be going on! Plus it might take my mind off the fact that I've signed up to do Sober October, which I try and do in honour of my dad.
You are welcome to join in.
Declutter a corner: Clear one small area in your home to make it feel cozy.
Create a cosy reading nook: Set up a blanket, cushions, and a favorite book or magazine.
Bake something comforting: Make cinnamon rolls, banana bread, or cookies.
Bring nature indoors: Add autumn foliage, pumpkins, or autumn flowers to your home.
Unplug for an hour: Enjoy some tech-free relaxation in your cozy space.
Enjoy a hot drink: Take yourself on a coffee date and enjoy your favourite hot drink and watch the world go by.
Wear your cosiest sweater: Lounge in your favourite soft and warm sweater.
Start a gratitude journal: Write down three things you're grateful for each day.
Light a scented candle: Choose one with autumn scents like cinnamon, vanilla, or apple.
Take a cosy bath: Put in your favourite bubble bath or one of those bath bombs that someone bought you for Christmas and you've never used. Enjoy a long hot soak, light candles, read your book, play your favourite album and enjoy the peace.
Watch a feel-good film: Pick one of your favourites or an autumn-themed one.
Make your Favourite breakfast: Whether it's a bacon sandwich, pancakes or croissants, make your favourite and enjoy every mouthful.
Wrap up in a blanket: Spend some time wrapped in a soft blanket, perhaps while reading, watching your favourite film or having a disco nap.
Write a letter to a friend: Send a friend a postcard or a letter, something to make them smile when they get their post.
Have a game night: Play board games or card games with friends or family - try not to fall out with each other, my family refer to Scrabble as "Squabble" for a reason!
Make homemade soup: Make something warm and comforting to share.
Plan a no-screen evening: Spend the evening with no phones, just books, music, or conversation.
Have friends around for dinner: You don't have to make anything fancy, just enjoy having a meal together and chatting.
Enjoy a nature walk: Take a walk outside, enjoying the crisp autumnal air and changing leaves, maybe meet a friend for a walk and a natter.
Pyjammas all day: Treat yourself to brand new pyjammas and spend the day chilling out.
Try meditation: There are lots of free apps or meditations on YouTube you can try, it's amazing how much of a difference 10 minutes can make.
Do some gentle exercise: Whatever your favourite form of exercise is make time for it.
Make an autumn playlist: Put together a list of songs that make you feel cozy and calm.
Eat seasonal fruits: Enjoy apples, pears, or pumpkins in a seasonal recipe.
Spend an evening with a book: Dedicate time to reading with no distractions.
Try a DIY project: Knit, craft, or paint something simple and relaxing.
Create a cosy bedtime ritual: Set up soft lighting, read a few pages, and relax before bed.
Open all the Windows: Change the air in your house. I love doing this, it makes everything feel fresh and I know it sounds weird, but it feels like it re-invigorates the house.
Have an early night: get into bed and enjoy some good sleep.
Write down your October highlights: Reflect on your favourite bits from the month, me and my sister tend to do this every month and it's a really positive thing to do.
Set November intentions: Make a list of all the things you're looking forward to in November and the things you'd like to do.
I'm going to do my best to do all the things on this list and if you do any (all of them) let me know, or if you've added in other ones, I'd love to hear about those too.
